More so the act of taking a human life. You don’t think when it’s late at night you’d stop to think about all the people

True. Even some troops require counseling if they killed people in combat during their years of service for the emotional distress. Self defense killing that isn’t in the line of duty is bound to cause some form of PTSD for your average civilian, unless they’re a sociopath.

Maybe. I honestly don’t know. I ran into a deer a few years ago with my car and the cops came and shot it dead to put it out of its misery. I felt bad for a bit but I’m not exactly losing sleep
Over it it. Hunters kill things all the time and are okay with it.
Killing a human, though. Yeah. Unless you’re a sociopath, that damned empathy is what gets you thinking about all the lives you’ve harmed by taking the life of your attacker. Cognitively you can reason through why you did it but emotionally, due to empathy, the situation becomes muddled.

Because when you kill anyone in self defense, it’s not a one and done thing. You have to defend yourself against legal scrutiny and that forces introspection. You will think about the other parties family because your reasons for defending yourself will likely entail wanting to fight for your life and the things in it you care for like your family. That’s empathy.
Logically I agree. Why would you care. He tried to kill you so you killed him for it. It’s that simple.
The issue is, humans are not logical animals. We think we are but every decision we make is colored in some capacity by emotion. I think you’d feel different if you actually had to kill another human being.

"I think you’d feel different if you actually had to kill another human being."
Agreed.
This is something the news stories never cover.
How the killer in self defense may or may not feel remorse for taking another life.
