It isnt about retaining power. It is about moving in the right direction. I am a 'Never Democrat' voter. If I have to accept someone like Trump or a democrat then I will grit my teeth and vote Trump. It is the lesser evil.
However I sincerely hope that they chose someone closer to as Gowdy.
