is the original title, and a much better one I think.
Whimsical British film set during WW2 where an operation is mounted to retrieve a Cow from the channel islands. Plucky islanders, mostly decent Germans and good humoured Brits with David Niven charming his way through the film accompanied by the very beautiful Glynis Johns and a dependable supporting cast.
I think it's particularly well filmed by Ernest Steward who has a long list of recognisable British film credits to his name but no awards listed. I guess that makes him a dependable journeyman cinematographer but I bet he had some interesting stories to tell.
It was made in 1951, only 6 years after the end of the film but gently comedic and with
good Germans- that's also a little bit interesting - or perhaps just terribly British.
Edit: Apparently there is a colourized version available - PLEASE DON'T WATCH IT!
