Keep in mind: if the ADULT victim is unconscious WITH a palpable pulse, chest compressions are NOT applicable (yet).- Clarification: I believe that the AHA and the American Red Cross guidelines may differ on this, with the Red Cross calling for compressions to be initiated on an unresponsive adult patient WITH a pulse but who is not breathing. It is also worth noting that for a pediatric patient with a pulse under 60, the guidelines may not be the same as for an adult patient. (Clarification added 2-21-26)

I am only going by the AHA protocols for ADULTS from the last time I renewed my BLS for healthcare providers a few years ago (which has admittedly expired).
And that was that if you could locate a palpable pulse, do not administer chest compressions.
That typed, the AHA protocol at that time did say to spend no more than ten seconds attempting to palpate a carotid pules, and it does seem quite possible that if the patient had a weak pulse one might not be able to locate it withing ten seconds, meaning that I suppose compressions probably have been initiated on patients with a pulse. And I suppose there are some risks associated with that scenario.- Clarification: Also worth noting is that AHA BLS protocols for pediatric patients vary depending upon age of patient. For example: brachial pulse assessment for infants, I believe it is still Airway, breathing, circulation up to a certain age due to most pediatric cardiac arrest being related to asphyxia. Compressions to recue breath ratio may also be different. (Clarification addendum added on 2-21-26)

AHA CPR protocols have changed over the years.
The first time I took BLS For Healthcare Providers it was: airway, breathing, circulation.
I am a few years out of date, but the last time I renewed,
FOR ADULTS
it was: circulation, airway, breathing.
TBF, from this picture, we cannot tell where "Andrew" is in the sequence.
*it's worth noting that the Red Cross protocols vary from the AHA protocols. At least they used to. As recently as 2014 going into 2015 the Red Cross was still teaching Airway, Breathing, Circulation, and also still teaching 'the blind finger sweep' to assess the airway! However, at least in the US, the AHA is considered the gold standard. -

I would bet money that the protocol still calls for checking for a carotid pulse only.

This means that you are taking something which is wrong and believing it to be right
