I mean okay, everyone has an opinion. But nothing out there has made me change my mind of how awesome i think this film is.
Not one person has convinced me. I'm trying sooooo hard to be convinced, i just want to see WHY there is no love for this, but i can't.
Maybe i'm strange who knows. But it just seems a lot of critic just jumped on a bandwagon and made up some random hate for this film.
I'm not going to go on forever about how much i think this film rocks because i'd be here all night, but i can't see past that.
Now i love all the greats, Godfather, Shawshank, Pulp Fiction etc.. but still LOVE this.. maybe i'm more open minded about film choice than most of these so called professional critics who write anything it seems and collect the cheques.
Now Mr Lucas.. i've NEVER seen your Star Wars films and most likely never will but you sir, are a hero of mine for this movie alone. I salute you.

I don't find the hate that hard to understand. This is a pretty atrocious film.

Not a favorite movie of mine, but it's enjoyable for me to watch even now. It's ridiculous but at least it tries a little, more so than some other comic book movies. It's not like the premise of Howard the Duck is complex. A duck-like extraterstrial crash lands on Earth, meets a woman (who becomes his companion/girlfriend), and they go on wacky misadventureswhich this film tries to emulate. Problem is, it needed to have more tongue-in-cheek humor and social commentary like the original comics had.

"Not being made to win awards" does not mean something has to be done poorly.

Really? What was done so poorly?
This is an Oscar next to all the garbage out there now thanks to "digital" film making and atrociously cheap CGI.

I also love this movie, always have! Sure, the plot with dark lord is a bit thin, but the animation, Howard is - cool!

It manages to be entertaining throughout, especially the scenes with Jeffry Jones as the Dark Overlord. Yet people who haven't seen it in 20 years will trash it and call it "too silly."
This is too silly? From the decade that gave the world Ninja Turtles, Alf, Small Wonder, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Date with an Angel, The Heavenly Kid, Splash, Mannequin, My Stepmother is an Alien, Short Circuit, Teen Wolf, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Goonies, Monster Squad, Buckaroo Banzai, Oh Heavenly Dog, Full Moon High, Zapped, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, The Man Who Wasn't There, All of Me, The Man with Two Brains, Weird Science, Morons from Outer Space, Batteries not Included, Cocoon, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Ghost Fever, Harry and the Hendersons, Cavegirl, Big, Vice Versa, Like Father Like Son, 18 Again, Walk Like a Man, Spaceballs, My Best Friend is a Vampire, Alien from LA, Beetlejuice, Earth Girls Are Easy, Ernest Saves Christmas, High Spirits, Vibes, Who Framed Roger Rabbitt, Bill & Ted, Erik the Viking, Teen Witch, My Mom's a Werewolf, Spaced Invaders, Martians Go Home!, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Weekend at Bernie's, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid it should have been right at home.
Please forgive the mother of all run on sentences. I'm sure there's also no shortage of people who just want to get on the hating bandwagon; the Bedtime for Bonzo message boards are always full of people who don't sound like they've actually seen it.

I like it. It was the '80s. When even bad movies were awesome. Other googies include TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, the MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE movie, also the much more famous COMMANDO, and highly underrated anime ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE.
Now Mr Lucas.. i've NEVER seen your Star Wars films and most likely never will
Wow. I've never known anyone to say that. Ever.

i don't get the hate either, I think this movie is a massive achievment. The way it was build is fantastic. But I concede that it looks dumb, you know, it's like listening to a Nirvana guitar track, it looks simple but you would fail trying to reproduce the same because it's more than having a stupid duck telling stupid words, you need the magic touch to make this movie happen. Most director would fail, but the magic touch of one filmmaker can transform a piece of crap into an enjoyable and rewatchable movie. It's in the details.
Apparently no oscar exist for that type of achievment. but it's an amazing movie for sure.

People need to lighten up, and go into films knowing at least a little hint at what they're getting into.
I see a duck with a cigar reading the rolling egg. why would I go into this expecting quality? To me, it did everything I hoped it would. Duck-on-woman romances, man having mental breakdown, Quack-Fu, rock 'n' roll, boobies, it's got it all!
Best part is, it's advertised as a kid's movie with a PG rating, yet no one seems to pay much attention to that, other than the whole "it's a talking duck!" part.

What you have to remember about this is that George Lucas promised his fans nine Star Wars films back in the early eighties.
However right after he finished Jedi, he decided to go off and make this, along with Labyrinth and others. At the time I wasn't aware of his divorce, and his wife's massive settlement which left Lucas without the money to make another Star Wars film, and many Star Wars fans, along with myself felt betrayed.
As a result I never watched any of the films he made in the eighties after Jedi, (except the Indiana Jones trilogy of course).
So as you can see, it's not just a hatred of the film, it's the fact that many felt let down as a result of it.

Its a polarizing film. Either you love it or you hate it. 28 years later and its still fondly remembered by people whether in a good or a bad way.
I enjoyed the movie, but it just wasn't Howard The Duck.

I have always loved this movie for what it is. As a kid I watched it and enjoyed it, but now as an adult I see that in certain aspects its a lousy film. But you know what, that is what I enjoy about it, that it's just fun! Plain and simple. It's like a good action, funny, idiotic, and silly cartoon come to life. All the more Sylvester Levay created the soundtrack and I'm his fan from Airwolf. I just love this movie, I don't have to think or keep track of anythingit's simply a good, fun time pass. Before I get told for being tasteless, well I do like the better films out there too that are critically acclaimed, but I love those ones just as much where I can sometimes switch off and relax.
