She brought Depth to ABBA - Thank you for the Music, Frida! πŸŽΆβ€‹πŸŽ΅β€‹
She was never the loudest, never the most flamboyant, never the most conspicuous figure in the ABBA universe. But Anni-Frid Lyngstad was β€” and is β€” that artist whose presence fills a room, even when she hardly speaks. Today, Frida lives a secluded life in Switzerland, where she is celebrating her 80th birthday.
                        Anni-Frid Lyngstad *November 15, 1945
This afternoon, it's still cloudy over the snow-covered slopes of Zermatt. Somewhere there, in a chalet, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, who turns 80 today, sits and enjoys the peace and quiet she cultivated over decades.
A woman whose voice was heard by millions worldwide and whose life path was anything but straight on.
Anni-Frid's roots are already marked by drama. Frida, as the singer would later be known, was born on November 15, 1945 in BjΓΈrkΓ₯sen, Norway. Her mother was Norwegian, her father a German soldier. After the war, her mother fled with Frida and her grandmother to Sweden β€” out of fear of the aftermath and the stigmatization of the so-called
                        "Tyskerbarn"
(children of German soldiers). Her mother died young, when Frida wasn't even 2 years old, so she grew up almost exclusively with her grandmother. For a long time, she believed her father perished with his ship at the end of the war. It wasn't until 1977, through research by the magazine BRAVO, that she learned that the former Wehrmacht soldier Alfred Haase was still alive.
Music was a refuge and a calling for Frida from an early age. She began singing as a teenager, initially in dance and jazz bands. In 1967, she won the talent competition
                        "New Faces"
which landed her a record deal. Unlike Agnetha FΓ€ltskog, who established herself as a young songwriter with her own fan base around the same time, Frida worked her way up over years and countless performances in small towns, a laborious but formative path. In 1971, she met her future husband Benny Andersson β€” an encounter that would lay the foundation for ABBA.
                        Frida represents artistic Depth
When the group ABBA formed in 1972, all four members (Frida, Benny, Agnetha and her husband BjΓΆrn) already had professional experience. In the public eye, Agnetha is often more prominent β€” blonde, clear soprano, youthful image, a classic Swede through and through. This fits particularly well with the era in which the world exploded with bell-bottoms, platform shoes and disco balls. But ABBA always operates on two levels: the sparkling pop and the deep melancholy beneath it. Frida is often the one who carries this second level, with her voice, her presence, her artistic depth.
She isn't considered a loud, flamboyant or attention-grabbing figure in the ABBA universe. Frida is the artist whose presence fills the room, even when she hardly speaks. A woman whose voice not only shapes notes but also moods. She carries the band's more dramatic and mature songs.
"Money, Money, Money", "Fernando", "Knowing Me, Knowing You"
                        and
                        "The Visitors"
clearly demonstrate Frida's defining influence on the ABBA sound.
Some fans and commentators still say that the redhead was
                        "shortchanged"
compared to Agnetha. But she herself once emphasized:
"Agnetha and I weren't rivals. We were two very different voices, and that's precisely what worked."
Musically, their synergy is unbeatable. The interplay of Frida's warm, earthy and rich mezzo-soprano with Agnetha's crystal-clear radiance is a defining element of the band's sound. In songs like
                        "On and On and On"
the two women share the lead vocals β€” a harmonious dialogue that underscores the multifaceted nature of ABBA. The studio work is precise and intense.
"We often spent hours perfecting just a single harmony. Perfection was our trademark,"
                        Frida later recounted.
We had Success, but no private Life
The international tours were particularly exhausting for Frida and Agnetha. They had young children. The long journeys, jet lag and packed schedules took their toll. Agnetha later spoke of a
                        "constant struggle"
between the stage and family. Frida recalled:
"We had success, but hardly any private life."
This strain explains why both singers felt the desire for normalcy and later seclusion so strongly β€” more so than their male colleagues.
In 1979, Agnetha and BjΓΆrn's marriage broke down – their separation put enormous tension on the band, but also inspired one of their biggest hits
                        "The Winner Takes It All"
. Two years later, Frida and Benny ended their marriage after only three years, musically processed in songs like
"When All Is Said and Done"
                        .
Separated yet friends, even after many years: Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson in May 2025
at the celebration of the third anniversary of the ABBA Voyage show in London.
The band's dynamic was no longer the same. ABBA no longer radiated the unbridled lightness of their earlier years. Frida later summed up the situation:
"We were four people with four lives. And suddenly we were supposed to lead a single life. That can't last."
                        She would be proven
