No, it would have ruined the mood of the film. Remember, the ghosts in The Shining may
or may not
be real; chances are they're just figments of Danny's imagination (or "shine"). Eventually, Danny's visions become a sort of collective madness or hallucination with first Jack and then Wendy (the most level-headed of the bunch) seeing the ghosts. Part of what makes The Shining so compelling is not knowing if the ghosts are really there or if they're just inside the characters' heads due to the isolation and Jack's mental collapse.

If the movie was to be theoretically based on the book, they should have tried to actually base it on the book. Theb3 part 1997 made for TV version of The Shining was much better.
