Did he have to die?

I like movies like Donnie Darko that utilize non-linear structure (like the airplane crash) but not to the point of whoring it out or making it "masturbatory" as John Carpenter would say (not saying that Darko failed, it did the exact opposite of that, for me at least). It's disappointing that the director didn't do anything more with his career, but at least he made this cult classic.

I saw it once many years ago and haven't really given it much thought. It wasn't a movie that stood out to me as something I wanted to see again and again. Some movies can grab your attention and are fun to watch even a few times. I know this one seems to have a cult-like following.

Yep. The two different planes of existence and how at the end, he made the conscious choice to accept his fate of death. He also was a "recipient" like the old lady with grey hair, yes? He utilized his "gifts" (was it water and metal?) to keep the universe from imploding on itself or something. Is that the general idea?

I watched it early this morning, which was the 2nd time I've seen it, so I was trying to remember my first viewing and then take in new things this time around. The first time I watched it, I didn't pick up on a lot of the clues.

I do too! I've watched it several times, and I like picking up bits and pieces that I missed in the previous viewing. There are definitely times where I feel like we
are
living in the matrix when I see how "plugged in" people are. I also get the feeling most people would choose the blue pill. The woman who played the original oracle was so perfect for the role! I loved her. It made a really big difference when she passed, and they had to recast. There is so much depth to the movie, even today.
Totally agree with you about the sequels. I heard that they were intentionally made to be "bad" (but I don't know the context of those allegations). But with each sequel, I think it just sank further and further into the abyss. Nothing beats the first flick!

It's brilliant!
But doesn't it remind you of today in 2025, and even looking forward? People are plugged in. They have VR goggles which allow you to experience whatever "world" you choose to enter, and to create your "character" however you want to be, look however you want, be whatever you want. Everything is just a few clicks away. The world could be burning down around them but if they've been sitting there plugged in years on end, what's the incentive to take the red pill and experience reality if it means discomfort, hard work, working against the mainstream, not being manipulated by or dependent upon the system for anything and feel the comfort of being a sheep that's just following the program.
