for me, he was actually normal, he wasn't a stereotypical rockb68 star, he was a decent person, he didn't have 5 tattoos and 20 groupies. He was very relatable, he didn't portray himself as larger than life cartoon character, he was vulnerable, he was flawed, I think he is the only musician i would want to know in real life.

His sarcastic sense of humor plus the whole funk the industry attitude he had. Wheather it was a facade or not it appealed to teenagers in the early 90's. he was also very concise of trying to make sure he didn't sell out. He would call out anyone he tought was fake. Plus his music was great so that helps.

What made him cool was his sincerity.

He was different than every other "rockstar" that has ever been.
He wasn't sleeping around with groupies and using women like sex toys. He was instead a feminist who spent his time respecting women and his girfriends and supporting women's rights groups.
He didn't flaunt his money, fame, success and develop a giant ego. He instead remained completely humble and sweet.
He basically was just a really good person who wasn't afraid of being himself by not living up to the stereotypical cliched image of what a rockstar should be. Kurt just thought/acted different than most males in general. He was much more feminine in spirit which was of course what made/makes women drawn to him.

He had a cliched Sid Vicious fixation, not sure that was cool.
