I'm currently undergoing a complete re-evaluation of all my longstanding fave foreign flicks.
I'd started out early with Ingmar Bergman and Fellini. I still agree they're important. But under fresh re-examination, I've come to understand that I am simply not as much a fan of either, as I thought I was.
They're valuable tools for learning, for studying, for training one's eye.
But these days I would shove all of Fellini aside for something instead by Antonioni. Antonioni is much more subtle; much less bombastic.
That being admitted, if I must then settle on just one favorite foreign film I would shove all of Antonioni aside for just this one title:
Il Sorpasso
. The pioneering Italian comedy, the buddy movie classic.
I believe it is the most fun foreign film I've ever experienced. Simply did not want it to end.
As noble and profound as many foreign works are …I can get philosophy & ethics from books.
