Though it's veiled. I think the main character killed herself and that bus that never came is used as a metaphor.
Through the movie you see her while life falling apart. She can't adjust to the rat race, loses her best friend who moves on and her college acceptance is dashed. It's actually an incredibly heart breaking movie.
The main character is basically a real person, she's literally like so many 18-19 year old who have no idea what to do with their lives or how to adjust. Unfortunately she couldn't adjust. It's incredibly sad.
