I prefer Brotherhood to the original FMA

Nah, I've come to realize that's true about just about everything. My only mistake was saying that it's only for anime after 2000.
99% of all media from any given time period is pretty bad.
So many stories, so little time. -
EvangelionManFromTheOtherSide — 12 years ago(May 10, 2013 01:23 PM)
Watanabe's Samurai Champloo and Kids on the Slope are better than Cowboy Bebop.
Evangelion 3.0 is the best anime film made in the last 10 years.
Waiting in the Summer is better than AnoHana, which is still a good show in its own right.
Black Rock Shooter is an incomprehensible mess with little to no redeeming qualities in the narrative.
Summer Wars is better than The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Kiki's Delivery Service is Miyazaki's best movie.
Voices of a Distant Star was very mediocre when compared to Shinkai's subsequent outputs.
DBZ has horrible animation.
The ending of Angel Beats is not really sad.
Paprika is Kon's weakest work (save for Tokyo Godfathers, which I've yet to see).
I'd hate to take a bite outta you. You're a cookie full of arsenic. -

Akira
is a mediocre snorefest.
Princess Mononoke
is average at best.
TTGL's
Yoko is a useless t!tty-monster.
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance
is the anime equivalent of
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
. -

Yes, yes, and yes. Tokyo Godfathers is superb, though; rent it sometime.
Here are some of my unpopular opinions:
-Love Hina is incredibly unfunny
-Clannad, Spice and Wolf, Rozen Maiden, and Eureka 7 were complete wastes of time
-Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa were all too long and far too complicated
-Porco Rosso is the best film that Miyazaki has ever directed
-Ponyo is a much more enjoyable film than My Neighbor Totoro
-Cowboy Bebop is good, but not great
-5 Centimeters Per Second is a total bore -

Disappoint? What?
I've been wanting to watch
Monster
for a very long time, in fact I think it was one of the first recommendations I got, but have been postponing it to watch shorter series. I'm not that fond of
Death note
as its second half is a step down, but it's a lot of fun. And I am interested on
Trigun
, though not as a priority.

Trigun
starts off strong, but after episode 13, it gets bogged down by heavy-handed melodrama and rehashed plot threads.
I've also read the first volume of the
Monster
manga, and I promptly dropped the entire thing. Honest to God, hasn't the author ever heard of the word "subtlety"? -

That's actually a popular opinion of the show now.

My top3 series are, currently:
- Azumanga Daioh
- Cowboy Bebop
- Mushishi
The problem, though, is that I put above them my two favorite movies,
Grave of the fireflies
and
Spirited away
. So
Cowboy Bebop
ends up in the 4th position.

I can just make a selection:
I don't think Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime of all time*.
Makoto from School Days
didn't deserve to die.
**
Light is the villain of Death Note and I'm glad the show ended as it did.
Shinji Ikari is a realistic character.
I didn't find FLCL engaging, but to be fair I had a hard time understanding it.
*Of course it's not the best. It's just the 4th best
*Actually, I think of this in other way. Being the massive amount of worthless characters this series was, I just didn't think it had to be Makoto
the one who specifically had to die out of everybody.
Black Rock Shooter is an incomprehensible mess with little to no redeeming qualities in the narrative.
Summer Wars is better than The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Voices of a Distant Star was very mediocre when compared to Shinkai's subsequent outputs.
*I still kind of enjoyed it, though. If you are talking about the OVA, I haven't bothered with the 8-episode series.
And
I like the original series ending better than
The end of Evangelion
, and to me it makes a lot more sense.
On
The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
:
Haruhi is supposed to be a spoiled bitch. It's okay if you hate her and the anime can still be good.
I do legitimately enjoy the second season and
that
event.
It is one of the most absurdly misunderstood series as it is often labeled as cliché yet it has a crazy original premise and it is very wildly -at times absurdly- innovative at its narration.
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
is better than
Ghost in the Shell
.
Howl's moving castle
is a narrative mess with an awful ending trying to tie everything together.
Some
One Piece
filler arcs are way better than any canon arc coming from episode 408 on.

This isn't meant to be a condemnation of this thread, but I do feel like some of the opinions being expressed are only unpopular amongst some groups of anime fans whereas in a different group they're the norm? It's like how, yeah there are lots of people who like the live-action Transformers movies, but there are also lots of people who don't, and I'm not completely sure that the yay-sayers outvote the nay-sayers, especially if we're talking about overwhelming majorities rather than just a 60-40 split.

Not sure why you specifically replied to me (was that intended), but that doesn't really apply to what I posted. Sky Crawlers got mostly positive reviews in general.
You do make good points though. I just think people here (including myself) are saying our opinions are unpopular based on general consensus.

Sorry if it looked like it was specifically directed at you, when I'm making a general point I just reply to the last post, maybe I should reply to the first one? I actually wasn't sure how popular The Sky Crawlers was though, not least because even if a lot of critics liked it (and I do personally like it), I'd heard quite a few people say they didn't like it and it has less than 7/10 on here so I figured that it wasn't something that just about everybody liked? Anyway, I respect your opinion on the movie and I'm not trying to start an argument or anything, it's just that since clearly a lot of the public don't pay much attention to the consensus of critics when deciding what to watch I feel like just the opinions of critics don't represent the opinions of everyone, they're just one group of fans/people with an interest. I know it's more complicated than that, but I guess that's what I was trying to get at with my post.
Not that it's wrong to state your disagreement with critical consensus or anything, just that their opinions are just that, even if they're taken particularly seriously by some people for reason ranging from happening to usually agree (which is pretty much why I pay attention to what critics say, but will sometimes see something anyway even if they didn't like if I think I will - Hotel Transylvania is a prime example of this, I didn't know that it had received a rotten on RT before I bought it but I would have bought it anyway even if I had known because it looked like a really fun movie and I'm a fan of Genndy Tartakovsky, and I did end up really liking it when I bought it so my instincts were right), to wanting to feel intellectually superior to other people.

I prefer Brotherhood to the original FMA
How is that unpopular? Most of the fans of the original manga prefer Brotherhood to the original FMA series.
My unpopular opinions:
Hetalia is a terrible series.
Elfen Lied is overrated.
Vampire Hunter
Bloodlust is better than the Vampire Hunter D movie from 1985.
Romeo x Juliet is awful in every possible way. Even "Gnomeo & Juliet " was less insulting to the source material.
Naruto isn´t that good and Sasuke is one of the worst anime characters ever made.
Hunter X Hunter is better than Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. -
ImaWeabooApparantly — 12 years ago(May 17, 2013 08:46 AM)
Sasuke is one of the worts anime characters ever made.
How is that unpopular? Most "Naruto" fans I know find Sasuke irritating.
-While the 2003 FMA is good, it's not without it's flaws. Wrath was annoying as hell, giving Envy a gender was about as unnecessary as revealing that the Force is the work of micro-organisms, making Hohenhiem
Envy's father was a Masashi Kishimoto-level beep twist
, Dante had a good concept to her, but
was defeated too easily
, and Fuhrer Bradley
died out of pure stupidity
.
-"The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" was a terrible series with character that either had no personality (Yuki, Kyon) or were incredibly annoying (Haruhi).
-I think anime can be adapted into live action if put into the right hands. It's really like that with any adaptation.
-I think that there are Japanese voices more annoying than the dub voices. Orihime Inoue and Goku as an adult come to mind.
-On the subject of Orihime, I don't think she's the worst ever anime character. She's realistic because she doesn't want to fight, and her healing has saved many lives.
-Sakura Haruno is not the Aquaman of anime. She's actually useful.
Not necessarily anime, but Japanese entertainment related:
-I don't want Saban crucified for "Power Rangers." "Sentai" isn't this deep, adult series. It's a toy commercial that's been running for over 3 decades.
-On the subject of "Sentai," "Samurai Sentai Shinkenger" isn't perfect. I'm three episodes in, and the characters aside from the Green Ranger are either annoying or have no personality. Shinken Red is a self-righteous prick. -
Rectangular_businessman — 12 years ago(May 17, 2013 11:06 AM)
Most "Naruto" fans I know find Sasuke irritating.
I know that Sasuke has many haters, but he also has many fans as well. As the Naruto TV tropes page says on its YMMV section: "there are fans who think he is just as justified in his actions as Naruto is."
