Ultimecia in the past
clears up some plot holes and improves the narrative of the game quite a bit, and seems like a pretty rock solid concept…but the original story writers confirmed it is not the case, not even leaving it up for interpretation. Despite that I have personally decided the theory is canon in my playthrough.
