Silent Hill 1 is pure nostalgia to me. Silent Hill 2 was merely extremely depressing (went through a breakup during the week I played this back in 2001). Silent Hill 3 was just incredibly scary. I never got around to playing the 4th, but I saw itit just ranked in at creepy.

Just finished re-playing the series in order (as you do
and I have to say I'm with HotChip and solid-12 on this one. I'd say:
1 Silent Hill 2
2 Silent Hill 4
3 Silent Hill 1
4 Silent Hill 3
"2" is just a masterpiece and I really enjoyed "4", I can see what they were trying to do now and I liked the combat system, the spooky ghosts and the fact that you had to cope with hauntings in your apartment. Also really liked Cynthia and Eileen's alternate costumes
"1" has a great story and the sirens (of course!) and some great monsters.
For some reason, "3" just does not hit the right buttons for me (within the context of it still being a bloody good game, very spooky). Not quite sure why Possibly one thing is that it has the "look and feel" of "2" whilst revisiting a lot of the locations of "2" and "1", so just feels like a bit of a rehash.
Anyway, looking forward to "5" (although I'll have to buy a new system to play it on). -

4 was a great game, but not scary or disturbing by any means. 4's combat is more involved and less limiting, but all of the others have the advantage of the scare factor. 2 was damn scary, 3 was disturbing as hell, 1 was a little creepy.

My favourite is easily SH3. It is the creepiest and scariest out of all of the games. SH 1 was good but not as scary as the 3rd game.SH 2 got a little boring because it wasn't scary and there werent enough monsters. SH 4 was an awesome game but it's to different to be properly called a silent hill game.

I've only played Silent 1 and 2 but I think 2 is the best. However, Silent Hill has more likeable characters, but I preferred the story in Silent Hill 2. I have yet to play the 3rd game, but from what I've seen it looks pretty damn horrific, and it took me ages getting through the 1st and 2nd game because I was so scared. I will probably play them someday, though.

I agree with you there I've played all 4, and SH3 is the scariest so far.
SH4 wasn't scary, only the creepy stuff that happened in the apartment could be scary every once in awhile.
SH2, on the other hand, had the best atmosphere, and a teeny-weeny bit scary every once in awhile. There was a think melancholy hanging over the whole SH2-game, which gives it the best atmosphere.
As a big Silent Hill-fan, I'll just have to say that the monsters have always been the weak part of the game, whereas the enviromental designs and the looks of the game were always the strong part. I want monsters that are intimidating and have a hostile feeling over them. Like Pyramid Head; now THERE was a monster that made me run!
The Silent Hill-series definately have to work on their monster-designs.

I agree 100% with you, Aegrimonis, by the time I'd escaped the appartments I was used to the monsters and barely acknowledged them from then on. But it's just the sounds that get you, the slamming of doors in the Society, the long staircase with the sound getting louder.. all those things make Silent Hill 2 scary. I'm not afraid of the monsters anymore, only if they creep up behind me or something, but Pyramid Head is still one scary dude.
Is it weird that the Labyrinth was the least scariest part for me? Even though I bumped into Pyramid Head but that was just hilarious for me, because he turned around reallyy slowly and it was like 'Umm, bye' and I started to back away and then ran. Also, the Labyrinth was the most interesting part in SH2.
I'm not keen on playing SH4 cause I've heard you don't even go to Silent Hill, but I will probably play SH3 sometime because the story interests me, though I've seen the mirror sequence and was scared just watching that on youtube. Sooooo.. -

If you're a Silent Hill-fan, then you
have
to play Silent Hill 4. It still has a nice Silent Hill-feel to it, and instead of fear and darkness being the dominant work-forces behind the veil, there is insanity and inhumanity, also doing a number on the player. Some of the monsters can be a little bland (watch out for the ghosts!) but Silent Hill were never strong on the monster-parts. But you should still check it out.

For scares, I thought 1 and 3 were the best. For sheer emotional resonance, 2 wins hands-down. 4 was easily my least favorite (more action-oriented and not really for fans of the series, IMO), though it probably had the best story; some of the twists were really clever. All things considered, overall I'd say 2 was the best, followed by 1, then 3, with 4 bringing up the rear. But, to its credit, 4 had those creepy-ass two-headed monsters with the baby faces, and they're damn near worth the price of admission; the first time I saw one it lurched toward me so quickly that I screamed and threw my controller up in the air. My girl didn't let me forget that for months.

Well I've played SH3 now and I can safely say it is the scariest of the entire series. SH2 is like Resident Evil next to SH3. However, in order..
SH2
SH1
SH3
This one is my least favourite so far. That doesn't mean it wasn't a great game though. Also, it scared me a little too much. I'm all for being scared but this game took being scared to a whole new level.
