SPOILER ALERT Many reviews of this film on IMDB mention how the cop shooting the fleeing thief at the end was uncalled for. After all, the thief was an old man, he was cornered with nowhere to run, there was no evidence that he had a gun, and he didn't present any danger to the cop. Yet the cop just shoots him. Reviewers said this was essentially the cop murdering him.
I agree. But they could have taken that uncalled for ending even further. The cop could have shot him, and then they could have had the thief just fall down on the ground there in front of the cop. The cop could then have walked closer and just fired the rest of his bullets into the helpless/dying thief. The cop would then start to reload his gun, and at the same time yell out "Stop or I'll shoot! This is the police! You are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent. Raise your hands!" By this time the gun is reloaded; and the cop gets right up close to the thief, bends over, and fires several shots directly into his head. As he straightens back up, the camera slowly zooms in closer to his face, and we see him with a big satisfied smile. … The End
