Doyle had earlier said at the Westbury Hotel that Charnier had 'made' him, in other words, recognised that Doyle was a cop?

I'd guess it was either for ****s and giggles or it was to see how he'd react knowing he had a tail
I prefer the ****s and giggles answer personally but that's because his name is Popeye in the movie and that's a comedy (Apparently!).

Maybe but why pretend to be a bartender if Charnier knew he was a cop?

By the way, thanks for your response.
It's good to see people still use these boards.
The IMDb should never have removed the boards. They were the best thing about the website.

The boards can be crazy sometimes but there's still plenty of old information on them and, every now and then, some good quality new stuff gets here too

                That's true.
The boards are still useful but not as good as they once were because not as many people use them.
I loved the way I could post a question about ANY film or cast or crew member (not matter how obscure) and have a pretty good chance of getting a response.

It might come back one day ScoMore.
Once everyone's been banned from whatever social media site they've used since IMDb message boards fell away.
There's something to be said about how the Internet used to be, warts and all

I hope it will come back but I doubt it.
The reason the IMDb gave for scrapping the boards was that people didn't find it a positive experience.
In which case, those people should have stopped using the boards and concentrated on the rest of the site, allowing everyone else to continue with the boards.
But I think the real reason why the boards were stopped was because the IMDb didn't want to moderate them - it was probably too big a task.

Not long until we have 'intelligent agents' able to moderate without the need for human ego.
As long as they let people have their tiffs in public without breathing up all the air I think we'll get the good old days of you calling me a basement dweller and me responding with something about your mom.
Communities always have dynamics which have a slight polarisation to them. The sooner this is understood and left alone the sooner people can police themselves again and not have whatever subculture is popular among moderation types on any given day.
But until them, you've got here
Believe me, this is the dregs of what was the dregs of IMDb here.
But there's heart enough in them yet
