You can buy a new (early 2005) restored DVD copy at rbcmp3.com . You can also watch an 11-minute clip from the movie!

Before I posted the question to the bloodhounds on the I Need To Know message board I thought Id give it a try although its been about 42 years since I saw this movie on TV. I got lucky. About the only thing I thought I remembered was that there was a group called the "Tugars" in there somewhere and low and behold, there it was when I searched for the name by "plot."
I remember that as a seven year old, I thought this movie was fantastic and I'd like to check it out again but as an adult, in many ways, my tastes have become more discerning. For example, there was another monster movie titled Caltiki the Immortal Monster. First time I saw that as a kid I thought it was great. A few years ago it showed up on cable and I wondered, What was I thinking? SoI think Id rather not make the mistake of buying the DVD solely on nostalgia.

Not better (the ones of LOTR 3 are longer, not so brand, more realistic [not so much in x-f, in those Ptushko stands quite well], and the badguys aren't defeated so quickly, but I think that on their different scales they're both great). I think Ilya Muromets had an influential weight on LOTR (like the makeup of the orcs, similar to the wind demon's, the ways the Tugar armie's move, similar to the one of the Nazgl, and mainly the battle around Kiev, which reminded me of the Minas Thirith siege).

The best thing about Caltiki the Immortal Monster. was the flimsy nightgown on the hot female lead. YUM!

Oh, man, I remember Caltiki! That dude's face getting pulled off or sucked in or whatever that monster did.
Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

This movie has perhaps the hugest surging horde scenes ever. There were 11,000 horses in this.
