It looked like he was overrun but I think if he had died they would have made more a big deal out of it, and like you say, his work is not yet quite done.
Not many of them left though. They are going to need to call on the Knights of the Vale if they ever hope to have a chance.

Do people not understand how ****ing BOSS Arya is and what she just did. Night King was unstoppable, NK shrugged off dragon fire. NK almost had a second dragon. Everybody was about to die.
Do you understand what she did? NK was not negligent. Arya took the FUCKING face of a wight and used it for her sneak attack.
