So, if wood is so valuable that the tiny carved horse was worth a fortune, how come that huge dead tree at Sapper's farm was just sitting there? Sapper was scrounging for $ (which the 6 minute prologue illustrated) while sitting under potentially millions of "credits" or "dollars" or whatever they used for currency! I'm sure the rebels could have used that currency…

Good point, but maybe it was rotting wood and had too much decay to be used for anything.

Trees take thousands of years to petrify and it has to happen underground, so doubtful.

Wasn't the remains of Rachel 1 buried in a box near the tree?
Maybe he felt like he had to leave it up as her marker or felt like it was too sacred to remove it?

OK but even if you're right, someone else wood (LOL Pun intended) have harvested the tree if it was so valuable, No? So its actually a really, really bad place to bury remains you don't want to be discovered.

Good point but the clues had to at least be slightly obvious to Gosling.

Another dumb thing in a movie full of dumb things that didn't make any sense.
Starting with why go after the farmer if he is a 'bot that was just keeping to himself in isolation and providing a service that humans needed?
Yeah, they needed him and the dead tree to find the remains of Rachel but there could have been a different or better way for her remains to be found.

That tree was dead for a long time. If that's the tree Freysa was standing in front of with the baby in that picture, it looked like it was just starting to die then, and that's when Deckard would have harvested the wood.
