Howdy. I was just wondering if anyone here could tell me what the song was that was playing on the music box at the end of the movie? I collect music boxes and want to get that song. (PS This movie rocked! It shows war and the bonds of men. Nothing more, nothing less.)

Watching this excellent film again yesterday I was also wondering the same thing:is it an original composition or something new?

Same here, too. The first time that I watched the movie well before the reconstructed version came out, that particular scene invloving the Sergeant, the young boy, and the music box really stood out as my favorite moment in the movie. When I was a kid, I did have a music box although it didn't look nor sound like the one used in the film. That scene was not only great, it was priceless.

Why did he die? Could have been anything.
              disease, malnutrition, heart failure, abuse.
              My guess is all three..

Sam speaks in a documentary about the end of the war that many people they found at those camps were simply beyond help.
This affected him quite deeply, and I'm sure the Kid in BRO is his tribute to those whom he and his fellow GIs could not save.

                  Very true.
I had an uncle who served as a medic with the 3rd Army. I remember when we were kids, we were told never to ask Uncle Frank about what he did during the war. I heard stories later from my mother. When he did talk, he told stories of times when they encountered a camp, it wasnt always a death camp. Some were slave labor camps, and others were simply prisons, but the inmates were always in the same condition. When the human body is deprived of nutrition for long periods of time, the metabolism breaks down. After all the body fat is consumed, and there is no more food forthcoming, the body begins to consume its own organs in an effort to stay alive. The less important ones first, then the others . This depletes the entire immune system and leaves it open to diseases and infections that it can no longer defend itself against. After a long enough period of time even solid food wont help and will, in fact, will do more harm than good. The body is dying. Its like that scene in Band Of Brothers where they liberated that camp. The Dr told them to stop feeding these people. Their bodies cant handle solid food and they could die from the shock.
God only knows what kept these people alive.
At least that boy knew some kindness before he died.

Checking for you with Dana Kaproff. I'll let you know what he remembers about that music box.

Sorry for the delay. Neither Dana Kaproff nor Mrs. Fuller know what music is playing on the music box.

It sounds almost Russian as far as classical pieces go. Fitting as it looked as if they were mostly Russian prisoners however. It’s not Chopin. Debussy? I will keep looking.
