Claire was an annoying prima donna.

Actually I think Claire was the most normal of that group. It was never revealed why Claire got detention that day?

She was the least relatable one (for me). I liked Bender best because he was the most truthful one.

Really? You cannot relate to Claire? You've never been part of a social group where everyone looks up to you and you have no individual identity within that group? You are not free to make your own decisions within the collective?
                That's Claire.

I doubt anyone really looked up to her. She was a narcissist. She thought she was more important than she actually was.

Did you even watch the movie or the scene that I'm discussing?
You sound just like Brian right now. He says almost the exact same thing about Claire. She cries and explains why she has to go along with her social group.

                      Yes, but it's been years.

So anyway..Alison was studying the positive attention Claire was receiving from Andy. John Hughes does a great job using the close ups on the faces of the actors during this particular scene.
I believe Alisom became jealous because Alison secretly had a crush on Andy. Her and Andy get together at the end of the film after Claire turns Alison into a clone of Claire.
So Alison lead that dog pile on Claire because Alison was jealous of Claire.
Claire was pretty. Claire was popular. Guys liked Claire and Claire had friends.
Alison was crazy, weird and had no friends.
