I just didn't really know if CA was used to tornadoes. It's similar to how we get them out here, but nothing compared to what "tornado alley" sees.

No, tornadoes are not common outside of
"Tornado Alley",
which is basically Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. All 30 tornadoes I have seen were in those three states. I would be willing to bet they freaked out big time.
