How come we never had these transgender debates? Why has it only come to the forefront these past few years.

Because it used to be considered a mental illness and everyone despised the unnatural freaks. Now a very small and vocal minority is pushing a sick agenda on normal people, with very ulterior motives. They don't even really support what they are pushing, and the majority doesn't either.
It's like waking up one morning and being told child rape and dog ****ing is now okay, and knowing there's nothing normal or same about it, but being forced to pretend it is. -

It's the woke mentally ill propaganda machine. Purple haired work shy fairies like frankenfag don't get much attention when they broadcast taking it up the arse anymore, so now they need to make it about gender.
These rainbow freaks are all just arseholes.

Because in the 90s, trannies were seen for the freaks they were and treated accordingly. If they weren't in the looney bins, they were on the fringes of society, where they belonged. Nobody gave a rat's ass about them, not even liberals of the time. Gay people were treated similarly, and it was extremely uncool to come out of the closet in that era.
It's only because of the Velvet Mafia being propped up by the Powers That Be on social media (including having Obama as one of their backers) that they started getting so much power over society, particularly in the film industry, politics, and academia.
Part of the entire thing is being pushed by people who want chaos in American society so the voters don't notice the govt slowly turning communist behind our backs. The other reason is, it was on the schedule for the Gay Agenda. If you take a look at the events of the mid-2010s, it all makes sense. In June of 2015, the SCOTUS (with no authority at all to do this) made gay marriage "legal" nationwide. The very next year, the population of trans adults and trans kids exploded. It all fits the pattern the agenda had, where once they had their own version of marriage legalized, they would start pushing for "trans rights," (although it seems more like a case of a tiny, very nutty minority bossing around everyone else).
It honestly was never about "equal rights." This was always about a quest for power and getting even with everyone they hated for marginalizing them all these years. Remember what happened when gay marriage was made legal? Gay couples deliberately targeted Christian bakeries and got entire state courts attacking them legally. That doesn't sound like a group of people who wanted "equality," or they would have left the Christian bakers alone.
And then look at what happened when trannies got more power: they immediately started punishing people for not using the right pronouns on them or playing along with their insanity. Even worse, they targeted people's kids behind their backs, and brainwashed rich parents into abusing their kids by making them trans before they were even old enough to go through puberty. It's disgusting.
Frankly, we're better off just throwing them all back into the looney bins and throwing away the damned keys. Or let them go live together on some isolated islands where they can live out their lives without anyone judging them.
