When I think of the worst comic book films ever made, I think of Fantastic Four (2015), Quantamania, Batman & Robin.
There's a reason for that. Sometimes there's drama behind the scenes. Sometimes the films are plagued with last-minute reshoots which leads to a disconnected story. Perhaps there were budget issues. Lines are badly delivered leading to unintentional laughter.
This is NOT that. This is an extremely well-crafted, well-edited film.
The cinematography is breathtaking. Every scene is lit perfectly. The shot the **** out of this movie.
To say Joaquin Phoenix's performance was stellar is an understatement. He was equal or better than he was in the first, and that's saying something.
I'd even go as far to say, even if Joker had a better story, this one was made better. If that makes sense. By the same token, I'd say Godfather had the more entertaining story, but Godfather 2 was crafted better. The production values are insane here.
I like this. It focuses on what comic book movies tend to ignore: the aftermath of a crime. The trial. The Avengers blew up half of New York to capture Loki. I want a whole movie based on what the housing and real estate market deal with the damage and how it's affecting the community.
It's not a 32% RT score kind of film. Not even close. Maybe 60%. There are redeemable qualities here. If nothing else, Phoenix's performance is Oscar worthy, again.
This is a hidden gem here. It's one that develops a cult following.
If someone had told me Love & Thunder is double the RT score of Joker: Folie a Deux I wouldn't have believed it. But it is. No one can tell me with a straight face that Love & Thunder is literally double the quality of Joker 2.
I didn't have any issue with the musical numbers. There were only about 5-6 of them and they were short. It wasn't Mama Mia!.
The ending leads to the Batman we all know and love:
The Joker who ends up fighting Batman kills Arthur and carves a Glasgow smile on his face.
Harley is pregnant, so her daughter will grow up to be the Harley Quinn from Batman lore.
Batman is a teenager here, so everything is age-appropriate now.
Harvey Dent gets blasted by the bomb in the courtroom possible becoming Two-Face.
Never lose your desire. -

I think this will be one of those movies that will gain appreciation over time. It's not going to be completely forgotten like some other of DC's recent output. It is much better than Shazam 2, The Blue Beetle, etc.
For the record, I thought Love & Thunder was ok. -

I liked it. Not quite as much as Joker but it's still a very good film.
I do wonder where its audience is though. I watched it in an empty theatre - which occasionally happens with early morning showings of more obscure films but was a surprise for this one.
I liked the musical numbers - I could wish there had been a few more - perhaps a big set piece number with lots of people joining in?
I'm not sure if the ending will lead to anything. It's definitely a nod towards the usual tropes of a Batman film but it looks like this particular team is done and I'm guessing Warner Bros will wait a few years and re-launch with a more conventional approach.
I have always depended on the kindness of Strangers - and the bastards let me down! -

You say it is EXCELLENT in the same post you say it is "maybe" a 60… Makes no sense, you either think it is excellent or you think it is a 6, cant be both.
Number of songs is not 5 or 6, it is between 15 to 20, but some of them are longer with dance, makeup, etc and others just short songs of the characters singing to themselves.
Other than that, I agree with most of what you said, I think it is a 5-6 movie. Not great but not the worst movie ever made either.
