I absolutely agree with the OP. I hate when people downplay how awful it is, claiming "It's not that bad", because it is. It's the reason so many people call this a terrible movie, it's the reason Sony decide to reboot.

As far as I know, nobody's defending this scene by saying that it's good. I know that people defend the point of the dance scene. Many haters of this movie say that this scene looks ridiculous and it makes fool out of Peter Parker. And, like it or not, that was the point. This scene was made to be intentionally embarrassing. The symbiote suit is embracing all the desires of Peter Parker. In this sense, his main desire was to be accepted by everyone and to look cool. The symbiote suit gives him confidence to act that way, but Peter, who's always been a naive nerd, doesn't know what the concept of being cool means. Thus, when he tries to act like one, it's embarrassing. And also, I don't think you're very familiar with Spider-Man, but there were dozens of moments in comics when he was trying to act confidently in public but people were laughing at him.

It is horrendous. I see some people, raimi lovers, cheese lovers, are trying to rewrite history with this film and claim that its not as bad as people make it out to be. Its actually worse.
Watching a beloved character reduced to some 'edgy' mongoloid, disco dancing down the streetwhat were they even thinking? Its a huge stain on the character of Spider-Man. Many people have said there was a fatigue for the character of Spidey due to having a reboot complete with origin within five years of S3id say a lot of fatigue set in when we had to put up with literally the cheesiest interpretation of Peter Parker yet, prancing about and acting like a total dick head.
Tobey Maguire actually wore eyeliner in this movie. Eyeliner. And what about that floppy fringe??
It's comments like this that make me think not everybody can be a film critic. The particular offense here is that the OP ignored what was going on in the movie at the time and making it sound like it was a continuation of the character's personality, oh and the fact he tries to degrade anybody else for actually understanding the point they were making. That said, I'll explain as best I can, but you'll really have to watch it yourself to see if i'm right or semi-close. The story of Spiderman is essentially about this mil-mannered, teenager who is a nerd among jocks and popular kids, the part in the movie where Parker deviates from this mirrors, to a certain extint, the character's reaction to "joining" with the alien symbiote; it screws with his head and makes him do some odd and uncharacteristic things, in a funny way, the scene was cheesey, light-hearted and fun, watch and laugh.
