What happened to the Xavier fortune?

By all accounts, part of the story of 'Logan' is about the protagonist struggling to make ends meet as a chauffeur. Its a plot point that he's motivated by the need for money to buy a boat and earn himself and Charles some peace in retirement.
Now, the question is, what happened to Charles Xavier's fortune?
Sure, mutants may have died out and the school may have shut downbut are we supposed to assume that this 'virus' or whatever it is somehow caused all of Charles' money to evaporate?
I do hope they explain what happened to Xavier's fortune, and to the X-mansion.
