Message boards shutting down.

I'm sure the discussion boards will eventually find their way back here in some form or another in a few years or something. But right now, they way they are ran is pretty sloppy and with the trolls kind of overrunning the place, its the best and easiest option to expunge all of that stuff and get a fresh start.

It's pretty clear from their statement that this is not about reorganizing but about farming out discussion services to social media sites. This way they don't have to pay staff to moderate reported posts, which they probably expect will save them more money than they will lose in ad revenue from those who leave over this. I expect this to be replaced with a join the discussion on Facebook (and whatnot) section/link and then that will be that. Unless this move somehow ends up making them lose more money than they saved I don't see why they would ever bring the boards back. -

I'd say that they will lose at least half of their members from this. I mean, seriously, it's not like the ratings here are as reputable as RottenTomatoes, and, wellnothing else here gets used very much outside of ratings and the boards.

I'm sure their most frequent traffic comes from people looking up movie titles, cast lists, etc. And I wouldn't be surprised if they integrate a social media chat directly into their webpage (you know, like you see a lot of news articles do for their comment sections). If their claim that most people are already chatting on social media is accurate I'm sure they'll be fine. They'll probably be fine anyway as another reason webpages ditch built in chats in favor of social media is because when people are talking about them on social media they're giving them free promotion. It's disappointing to me as I deplore social media but while I've seen a lot of webpages go in that direction I haven't see any reverse course so I see no reason to hold out hope that that will be the case here.

Here's a replacement in case they do it.
