Aside from problems with editing and story construction, the main thing it needed was not to center the film and audience expectations around the idea of Batman and Superman being at odds. A little tension, yes, but the whole motivation for Batman being suspicious of Superman didn't work. Snyder came up with this stupid idea for a plot, then built a film around it, then a title which gave the film a negative aspect with its "versus". It should have been called "Batman/Superman" and had maybe a little bit of tension between them near the start, before they team up.
