Well for starters Democrats are able to admit they were on the wrong side of history back then and took action to fix some of the lingering issues at great expense to their own political fortunes. I don't see confederate sympathizers doing the same thing.

Not exactly. The Democrats used to have a big tent with room for southern racists and big government. The Civil Rights Act just guaranteed the southern racist part of the party would leave the tent.
Also both parties used to have a lot more room for conservative Democrats or liberal Republicans. That's all long gone.
