Or was 1997 worse?

yup and i believe there was a Riddler and Two Face in there somewhere or that's what we were told that's what they were.
Also Steel,Catwoman and later on Jonah Hex,Green Lantern & Superman Returns (aka Stalker-Mopey Superman)
IMDB taught me: cynicism is praised. optimism must be stamped out wherever it can be found. -

DC fans weren't a religious cult back in 1997, so that iteration of Batman was allowed to die quietly, without a fuss. Even though the DCEU should also die without a fuss after the year they have had, it's never going to happen.

In terms of badness I think Batman & Robin is worse, HOWEVER the important factor is the hype and the disappointment : how many franchises have a great fourth movie ?
Were people really expecting a great movie out of Batman & Robin, the fourth entry in a franchise that was already giving clear signs of heading in a wrong direction ?
Most franchises back then lost steam quickly and by the third movie were DEAD, so we got another Batman and we went "oh, another one ? OK, I guess".
So yeah it was a huge turd, I must admit to my shame that I was there sitting in a theater in the summer of 1997 watching Batman & Robin : there is nothing more sad than that, I know.
But was I mad ? Nah, I wasn't expecting anything out of it, to me it could have ended with Batman Forever, it could have ended like most franchises ended back then : with a crappy third movie, just like Robocop and Ninja Turtles.
Batman V Superman is whole other story : the movie is "superior" to Batman & Robin (yeah not the best term to use: it's like saying that eating rotten eggs is an "improvement" over eating dogsh!t, I know)
but this was not the fourth entry in a tired franchise, this was supposed to be the BEGINNING of a new cinematic universe, one that fans have been awaiting their entire life !
So personally I think BvS is a much worse movie than B&R because of the expectations that people had and the fact that it destroyed any chances of having a great DC universe, which is something people couldn't even have imagined back in '97 so they didn't wish for it : now they do and that wish will never be fulfilled.
That's why BvS is worse than B&R IMO. -

We wont really know what damage this year has done to the brand really until Justice League is released. DC have certainly made worse films in the past but they never had the rivalry of Marvel back then to contend with or the flood of CBM in general.
To make a great film you need three things - the script, the script and the script -Alfred Hitchcock -

Fans go back and forth like that trying to find hope but there really is none where the WB is concerned. That studio has a way of confounding even good talent. Throw a hack like Snyder in to the mix and what you see is the crap we got.
