Movies don't follow comics all of the time, and look at Spider-Man 1 (Raimi film), she was in high school with him.
Also, just because the actress said she isn't Mary Jane, doesn't mean she isn't. Maybe Marvel wants it to be a big surprise/reveal and she says otherwise so the surprise isn't spoiled. I have no care whether she is Mary Jane or isn't, I'm just saying the possibility is there. -

Mary Jane went to his high school on Earth 1610 which may very well be what some of this story is based on. Too bad Torch and Ice Man won't get to be his roomies, because that's my favorite part of that series

I doubt she's Mary Jane Michelle Watson. If they do go the whole she's MJ but not classic Mary Jane route she'll be like Michelle Joan Walker or Michelle Jessica Williams or some other J girl name with a W last name and go by MJ at the end. That way they can have it both ways Zendaya is MJ but she's not classic Mary Jane Watson which leaves the door open for a more classic interpretation of Mary Jane later down the road.
I'm torn on the MJ but not Mary Jane theory because Zendaya said she wasn't a love interest for Peter but the only reason I can see from a narrative standpoint to have her all frumpy looking in the beginning is to set up a she's was pretty all along plot where Peter chooses her over Liz Allen towards the end of the movie. If she is MJ I don't know why the wouldn't just tell us people have already been outraged over it from when it was leaked/speculated months ago so it's not like it would be a shock at this point.
But, the fact that her character's last name hasn't been revealed yet is suspect. Michele Gonzalez wasn't a big enough character where revealing her last name would spoil anything major and I can't find another famous Michele Marvel characters. So unless her last name is Toomes, Osborn, etc., I don't really see the point in not revealing what her last name is.
