Well we know this year is being shot with three main arcs. What if they took all of the remaining weeks off after the next part ends ? So we come back in January, go through February, take March off and come back in April and run out the rest of the season. That way each break happens on a finale of sorts and I would think it to be less frustrating.
Oh btw no State of the Union Address this year.

I could live with that as long as the finales are FINALES like the Ghost Rider arc was.
      AoS 4.2
      March Madness
      AoS 4.3
      Works for me. 🙂

I would be happy with that schedule too. I love AoS, but NOTHING keeps me from watching March Madness!

Other shows on the schedule do air on Thursday-Sunday though, and since they are all taking time off, it makes it easier to schedule AoS's (or anyone else's) hiatus at the same time. It also makes it very easy to know when the hiatus is going to be without having to create extra advertising to inform viewership.
The hiatus is inevitable with the 22-episode/8-month schedule. They might as well make it a predictable one.

AOS is on ABC. AOS, starting January 10th, could probably air 7 episodes straight (possible interruption towards the end of January depending on when the State of the Union will air) and end on February 28th or March 7th; well out of range of March Madness. Thursday-Sunday games air on CBS. Again, what does March Madness, airing Thursday-Sunday games on CBS, have to do with AOS, an ABC show?
The simple answer is that they will run out of new finished episodes* the first week or so in March IF they were to air 8 new episodes in Jan-Feb.
*Finished includes Editing & FX which take 2 weeks AFTER shooting ends. Shooting takes 10 days and starts the last week of July. Writing starts in early June at the latest.
                    Other Factors:

                    1. No State of the Union this Year. Outgoing Presidents never do one and Incoming Presidents aren't prepared to do one. So they could air as many as 8 new episodes Jan-Feb this year. My guess is that we get a special or two.
                    2. Viewership: other than sports in January and February is higher than March thru May. Networks given the choice will choose to air new episodes and specials then rather than later. Yes they could air new stuff in the first 2 weeks of March but those dates are less desirable than those in Jan-Feb. And they still have to take some weeks off to let production stay ahead. Each week in Jan/Feb where we don't get a new ep does push the point where they run out of finished eps back a week of course.

I know about a typical shooting schedule through following how Person of Interest was shot. Filming for a season usually wraps in late March/early to Mid-April.
Reasonably close for AoS. they have finished early in April in the past. Anyway I went back and double checked my math. I think I double counted the editing/FX period so they would run out of new content 2 weeks later in Mid March. and of course that assumes nothing goes wrong that delays shooting. I am pretty sure they plan for that.
The article I read on the SoE and spouted out here was
                        definitely
                        wrong. Thanks for the link.
Thats why I gave the cushion of February 28th or March 7th as a finale for part 2 of the season. Figure possibly a 3 to 4 week break before Part 3 of the season starts. Part 3 needs to start either end of March or 1st Tuesday in April and end a week before the 2 night season finale of Dancing With The Stars, Spring Session (almost always ends the Monday & Tuesday before Memorial Day). Of course, there are going to be weeks off for production: 3 days for Thanksgiving weekend and a week for Christmas.
So far the AoS finales have been on May 13, May 12, & May 17. The corresponding Tuesday this year would be May 16. If they go with 7 to finish that would be 7 episodes starting the first Tuesday in April which would make it 7 episodes in Jan-Feb imo. At least 1 special of some sort in all that. Maybe another Marvel clip show.
Also I would think at least 2 weeks at X-mas not 1.

None of the networks air new material during March Madness, despite only CBS carrying games. They don't want the competition. State of the Union will interfere with the schedule.
And as I said above, they need to stretch 22 episodes across a full 8 months of programming. This means multiple breaks. This show took one long one for the holiday season, now it will take another one in March. If they don't, they won't make it to the end of May.

Obama's speech is half an hour starting at 9 and is a farewell rather than a SoE speech. It won't affect AoS at 10.
As for March, competition is certainly why there is nothing Th-Su. M-W is a little different and not 100%. A few shows on the big 3 still have new eps. The CW and maybe Fox will still be showing new stuff as well. And of course AoS was on in March for the 2 seasons that we had Carter.
