All the other characters were downplayed so Smith and Robbie could shine

I kind of got that after watching the extended cut. They didn't really give much background to the other characters in the movie except Deadshot and Harley. Even Diablo had his background explained a bit, but that's it.

I agree. Slipknot was pointlessbut i guess someone had to be the guinea pig to test if the nano bombs were real. I would have liked more background info on Killer Croc, Katanna & Captain Boomerang, these three in particular got 'the shaft' so deadshot & harley could be the focus. El Diablo even got better focus and more explanation to his character than all of them put together. And you know what else? Even though Enchantress ended up being the villian, I still feel that we did knot get enough of her (or rick flagg..) in the movie, as June Moone & while being the enchantress.

Exactly, pretty much the sole reason he was there. In fact he almost seemed like an afterthought.

We all knew he was going to be the "red shirt".
Yeah, the moment he got a tweet-long presentation - not everyone has read that comic.
But the one-sentence presentation made it overly clear that he was going to die.

Slipknot was important: he proved that the implanted bombs were actually working and thus the squad was kept in-line till the very last minute of action (Waller and the cell phone).

Spot on and it isn't as if Will Smith was good as Deadshot either, they neutered so many characters, like Flag, to make Deadshot the star. I'd say they messed up Harley Quinn as well in doing that, but possibly more so by trying to make her scenes Joker scenes and not Harley pieces. I really wanted the film to work but it didn't in the end.

They screw up Harley Quinn's past when they decided to screw up the Joker. They wanted to highlight Harley but they didn't want the audience to focus too much on her relationship with the Joker. Even Smith said that he wouldn't be the main focus of the film and that the audience would focus essentially on the twisted relationship between the Joker and Harley. Eventually, the studio realized that would destroy the main plot of this film and also the future sequels of SS that won't have the Joker as a main attraction.
