Trailer does nothing to raise expectations

They put it in February, which is traditionally when studios dump films they knew would suck beforehand. And the Marketing Campaign was minimal and got the exposure it did thanks to Ryan Reynolds himself doing it.

Hollywood is slowly abandoning the concept of movie "seasons " bit by bit - R rated movies and blockbusters don't mix

- Not as much as Jan and Feb are. Those are the dead zones.
- Says who? Just because Nice Guys didn't make a ton of cash doesn't mean anything.
District 9 was a Summer blockbuster rated R and it was a massive hit.

The trailer gave me expectations I never knew I had.
This is the first comic "superhero" movie I have ever looked forward to.
I have a low tolerance for all the family-friendly
/Disney-safe comedy/drama of the typical noisy CGI-fest superhero movie. I saw Ant-Man the other day and I could swear I was watching a combined sequel to A Bug's Life and Honey I Shrunk The Kids.

I have read many reactions elsewhere on social media to the effect that many grew up (physically) with the tale of Wolverine and his co-XMen over the years. Now that many have reached adulthood, isn't it even more likely that their entertainment choices would tend to be have a more dose of realism?
This trailer has given many hints as to how this new movie fare may be hewing to that changing taste in films for its original audiences.
Many are looking forward to this movie because of that promise! -

Are you kidding me? This is one of the most competently made trailers I have ever seen. I've watched it multiple times and I usually never do that with trailers. They knew not to reveal too much about the plot in it; it was more of a 2-minute long teaser than a regular trailer. But that's great because I don't want to know any spoilers anyway (usually I avoid trailers because of them). But it has already convinced me to see the film (if it doesn't get panned) by just giving me a
feel
for what it will be like -

As a Wolverine fan, I've been VERY disappointed in most of the X Men movies and ALL of his solo movies. And I'm not crying out for some R rated violent movie for him (although that is certainly his nature). The fact of the matter is he NEVER THINKS in these movies. While Logan is certainly a fighter and a brutal one at that who heavily counts on his healing factor, he still is a cunning, calculated fighter with animal stealth and smell and hearing and when they just have him barrel in and get taken down by 100 fighters he takes on all at once it TICKS ME OFF. The other thing that bothers me is yes, he has a temper and you should never ever get on the wrong side of it, but for the most part he has a deep seated personal belief to live and let live. He isn't a killing machine. It's part of what he fought against in the attempts to make him such.
I keep my expectations low then I can be pleasantly surprised. -

The Wolverine featured a lot more than him just charging headfirst into combat, and went out of its way to portray him trying to avoid any kind of fighting, until he was forced.

First, I am trying to make two points. One, that with exception to X1 and X2, for the most part, Wolverine has been poorly represented in the movies as being generally stupid and in plotless or lousy movies. My second point is I am afraid, in this new movie, that they're just going to make him brainlessly overkill violent due to the R rating.
I will prove my first point (which Wolverine falls under) with just one sentence: Wolverine just walks up the MIDDLE OF THE TOWN to get shot with 50 arrows.

That I can agree with, to an extent. X-Men Origins was somewhat guilty of that, but they h ave given him more character moments than just pure action, and The Wolverine did feature that scene (which was awesome in the extended cut), but not before they have him a lot of moments where he was dealing with the trauma of previous events, notably X-3, and connecting with people. It was a huge character piece, and actually moved things forward with the character in a nice way, that left me wanting to know more about what happened to him afterward. For the first time it felt like they had actually something interesting with him, instead of just him not knowing who he was, and fighting a lot don't get me wrong, I thought they did a great job with that in X2 though).

I suppose I can understand that fear, but based on what we have seen so far, I do not think they are going to go that route at all. Iactually quite like what Mangold did with The Wolverine, and Iknow that this time he is writing the film himself, rather than just adapting it. To me, it looks like a solid character piece, and I don't necessarily think that the film will be pure violence.

I can't imagine how even the extended cut will have made that walk down the center of the village awesome let alone intelligent. X1 and X2 couldn't focus solely on Wolverine because it was about the group, but I felt (even with the constant about his memory) he made connections with others and demonstrated his wits along with his physicality. I particularly like him in X2 with him recognizing the attack, taking out as many as he could with WISDOM, and then going all out when surrounded as will HAPPEN with superior numbers. IF ONLY The Wolverine had ATTEMPTED that during the village walk down mainstreet, I probably wouldn't hate it so much (even with ALL the other flaws of the film). I also throughly enjoyed his attempt at peace with the police outside Iceman's home, and the brutal fight between him and Lady Deathstrike when he tried everything he could not to kill her but finally realized he had to and did, unfortunately JUST before the mind control serum was fading.
I refuse to acknowledge that X3 even exists (I will forever hate the studio for refusing to accept Brian Singer's word that he could direct both X3 and Superman Returns, because I know he would have done X3 100% better than the one who did it Brett Retner or something who I don't believe has done a single GOOD movie let alone an excellent one). While for continuity's sake I appreciated the nods to X3 in The Wolverine, mostly it just rubbed me raw with the memory of the travesty of a WASTE. I was further irritated that, set in Japan, the only decent Japanese characters in the entire movie were the two women. Crazy grandfather, fillicidal father, deviant/pervert fianc, and then crazy ex boyfriend. Um, seriously? Can there really not be ONE sane, decent good male Japanese character? Nope. We have to follow in the vein of male Caucasian sweeps in a foreign country and saves the day (and the virginal maiden in distress, oh wait, not virginal as of COURSE he needs to bed her) since no one else can. And then Viper. Really sick of the villainess whose only job is to say a few lines and walk around in a catsuit and heels. I'm not sure if she had the acting chops to do much else, but she really nailed the "look sexy and walk around showing off those assets." I was really looking forward to it being set in Japan because the storyline of Wolverine in Japan is a favorite of mine. Wolverine in modern Japan sounded great, and then I saw the movie.
Let's just not even talk about Wolverine: Origins or the other one. YIKES. Just bad. BAD. Another line of travesties!
I have liked Mangold's movies in the past (3:10 to Yuma and Kate and Leopold) but I have to say, The Wolverine does not inspire confidence in Logan. Maybe if he has more writing/story power but even then, I'm really concerned.
I think I'll just keep my expectations low, and HOPE I will be pleasantly surprised. Either way, final judgment will have to wait until the movie comes out.
