did they just need to kill off a major character? or was she filming other projects?

She was just an annoying bitch that made one dumb decision after another and made everything harder for the team than it needed to be. She was basically Lori Grimes. She was deadweight.
I don't care about a troll who doesn't pay for his opinion telling me how to review movies. -

Because the writers don't know what to write about a female character if she is not a love interest, the ship of Oliver/Laurel sunk in season two. They gave her the mask and decided that with that her story ends.
I still believe that if Cassidy didn't insisted in the mask so much, her character would have still be on the show having civilian role as a DA or investigative layer. She could have been involved in the mayor office this season. But being vigilante and that's the only thing about you makes you perfect candidate for the grave.
And we could have had a BC equal to GA. -

The official reason was that they wanted to reintroduce stakes to the show, that feeling that nobody was safe and horrible stuff could happen, which was diminished greatly with the onset of time travel and the Lazarus pit. However, anyone who watched the S4 finale can speak to the particular lack of "stakes", despite the stakes being as high as possible ON PAPER. So it was an abject failure if the official reason is true.
Personally, I don't think the outcry of it being over Felicity is really the case. Laurel was so far removed from a romantic threat by the time she died that killing her for that reason would be a tremendous waste. I think it's more likely that they just didn't enjoy writing for Laurel (hence why they gave her no actual storyline in S4, not even trying to make it seem like someone else could be the one to die) and figured they could off her and potentially make some storylines out of it. The character was given a really horrendous backstory and some very unappealing development through much of the first two seasons, followed by a sloppy superheroine origin. I can't imagine it was fun to write for such a character, especially since they took away her status as Oliver's love interest AND bungled her backstory so she couldn't possibly be a legitimate colleague to Oliver in terms of skill. -

I am not a fan of Katie Cassidy and thought she was miscast. With that being said, she obviously died so they could bring her back as the real Black Canary/Dinah Lance through "The Siren". I thought this wasn't even a possibility, but it turns out I was wrong.
Either way, Katie is coming back, but as someone completely different from Laurel and instead as the person you guys know as The Siren from a previous episode.
The show probably didn't have the rights to allow the real Dinah Lance/Black Canary on Arrow and when they were given the green light to make it happen, they had to kill off the other Black Canary to bring the real one on the show. It happens.
Personally I always thought Laurel Lance should have never been on the show if they didn't have the rights to make her who she was meant to be. I thought she should have been brought in as a new character when they were finally given the rights to show the real Dinah Lance/Black Canary later on after Oliver had established himself. I think Felicity outshines Laurel in many ways. I know that both women have their own haters and their own fans, but in the end for me, Felicity was less annoying than Laurel and the most believable female character than Laurel. Laurel was the most annoying character to me because she wasn't the Black Canary I knew and loved. She was half of who she should have been and I disliked that the show ruined her character.
With the Siren coming on the show now (played by Katie Cassidy), I really hope Katie becomes likable when she come back to the show as a different take on Dinah Lance/Black Canary than the one that has already been on the show because I honestly have never liked anything she's ever been in. Her acting is fine, so I know it has nothing to do with that. I just find her presence in shows/movies to be lacking. -

Having her as a metahuman "Black Siren" opens up the possibility of her appearing as villain in Arrow, Flash and Legends. Whether they can convincingly repeat the story of Black Siren with Sara I'm not going to even speculate on.
Related to the main topic though - does anyone get the feeeling since people compared S1 & S2 Arrow to Nolanverse Batman that Laurel being a lawyer created comparisons to Rachel Dawes from the Nolanverse. In mainstream continuity Black Canary is defined as a great martial artist in the field for the Birds of Prey and that has always been the appeal that Sara made as Canary. Katie Cassidy was convincing as the crusading lawyer as Laurel, but could barely keep up with Thea when out in the field and was even further behind Diggle. Killing off Sara did not make her a more believable Canary and she could never meet that standard.
It's the same way I can barely believe Amell as Oliver Queen when he interacts with characters from before the island (maybe with the exception of Tommy). When Amell is fighting crime with Diggle etc. only then do I find him watchable. Maybe I'm being reminded too much that I could only watch Christian Bale as a Batman, but not as Bruce Wayne.

Well when the show was first planned, Nolan's "reality based" Batverse was the king of comic book adaptations and the Arrow producers went to great lengths to say that the show would be similarly real ie no magic, metas etc. So Laurel as lawyer was probably an extension of that and maybe Rachel Dawes as well. Ra's Al Ghul was probably similar thinking (although by that time "no magic" had gone out the window).
After Avengers once again made flashy superheroes insanely popular again, Arrow started to move towards more and more superhuman/magic based plots but Laurel got left as a lawyer for a long time in her own side plots that had nothing to do with the main plot and I never really bought her out in the field to be honest, although I could understand her reasons for wanting to be.
