I agree, it really helps your story to have some serious low points for your characters in order for their victory to really be meaningful. Luke Skywalker's journey in the Star Wars trilogy is a prime example of this. This type of story telling is meant to be cathartic for the audience; it immerses the audience in the story and puts the hero through hell to get us to sympathize with the character, and when the character eventually overcomes despair and the odds and is victorious we feel emotionally and psychologically relieved.
Story telling 101 I know but it's amazing how few "heroic" movies these days can actually achieve this. I think some of the problem is they're grinding out these superhero movies at a fantastic pace and do not spend the time polishing their stories first before jumping straight into filming them, and the essential essence of the hero is lost.
    Logan
on the other hand looks to understand this principal and I'm not even slightly surprised, James Mangold is not only a perfectionist when it comes to getting great cinematography, but he always starts with a good story FIRST. I think this movie will be a cinematic treat, and as the OP said, one with a lot of heart and an ultimately feel good, cathartic experience.

You had me until you described Mangold as a perfectionist.

You don't think that he is? He seems very meticulous to me, the level of detail in his movies always seems to be perfect, and he seems to me to get exactly what every shot calls for, but I have not seen his entire repertoire.

R rated violent films aren't feel good movies.
But it will be the movie that doesn't care about reception or box office hopefully.
Feel good (comic book) movie of the season will probably go to Wonder Woman or Guardians which will feature a touching (and likely humorous) father-son reunion.

There's a buncha r-rated movies that pull at your heartstrings. Most Oscar season movies are like that.
I can't think of examples, but i am sure there are some great r-rated action movies that do that, too.

              Well, i didn't say
              family
feel good movie of the season. But now that you mention it, i want to think of violent films that may meet the criteria. Also, i doubt that with an r-rating
              Logan
              will be ultraviolet.

No. Just because it's not common doesn't mean it can't be done.

I doubt it, I think it will have a bitter sweet ending, but with a lot of heart. I want this movie to be about a Logan with nothing to live for, That finds something to live for, then something to die for. I want to see Logan will his way through the last act. I think the R rating will allow this to have more emotional depth than previous comic book movies since the audience will be mature enough to appreciate it.

I though Beauty and the Beast was the feel good movie of March 2017.

                          For that demographics
I thought BATB was supposed to appeal more to those who needed their parents to take them to the cinemas
Which is probably the same rule for LOGAN but for completely different reasons! LOL!
To be honest I am not sure if I want to see the live-action version. I thought the animated version was original and entertaining and deserved its Best Picture nomination. Maybe it was because of the music! I have seen it also onstage and it was also magical because in a live performance, some of the scenes were eye-popping (
such as the Beast changing back to the Prince right before your eyes
). And music in the theatre, because it is sung live, is also very engaging.
I have seen the trailer and I am not too keen on some of the casting and the portrayal of the inanimate/animated objects. And why did they seem to be hiding the fact that this is a full-scale movie musical?! Not sure either if this is not going to make my original impressions become stale.
Maybe if they had retained the casting of Gaston from the Australian stage production
But this time, I would rather see "the Gaston from Oz" in a movie that is " Hopefully, a different tone. Humanist. Real. Moving. And yes, violent." but "not soulless spectacle" ( in the words of Mangold) because it is a new and refreshing take on the Wolverine saga.

Hopefully, it will reach out not only to superhero movie fans but also to general audiences because it has heart and grit the qualities we often see in real life!

As in organic emotional heft instead of the overwrought sentimentalist hokum we typically get as character development? Possibly.
