There are many similarities between Smallville and Supergirl:
Smallville is about Clark growing up and discovering what it means to be a hero.
Supergirl is about Kara coming out of the shadows and discovering what it means to be a hero.
Clark was friends with Lex Luthor
Kara is friends with Lena Luthor
On Smallville Lex had a complicated relationship with his father.
On Supergirl Lena has a complex relationship with her mother.
On Smallville Martian Manhunter worked as a detective and was a mentor to Clark.
On Supergirl Martian Manhunter works as a government agent and is a mentor to Supergirl.
Both are friends with The Flash and Green Arrow.
Clark tried dating his friend (Chloe) only to find out they didn't work.
Kara tried dating her friend (Jimmy) only to find out they didn't work.
Smallville had the Daily Planet as the recurring newspaper.
Supergirl has CatCo as the recurring news media.
On Smallville Clark had to help teach a newly awakened Kara about life on Earth.
On Supergirl Kara has to teach a newly awakened Mon-El about life on earth.
Both have a friend that is a hacker.
Clark would go to Jor-El for guidance
Kara goes to Alura for guidance.
Smallville had Zod and the Kandorians for Clark to deal with.
Supergirl had Non and the Kryptonians of Fort Rozz for Kara to deal with.
On Smallville Lois Lane was the 4th person added to the group of friends.
On Supergirl Lucy Lane is the 4th person added to the group of friends.

One of the comments on the linked thread states
"Every one of the previous TV shows and movies exists as a world in the DCU, including those that will not be acknowledged by CW, like Man of Steel, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Superfriends, and Green Lantern."
Some while back I saw an interview with someone working for DC (it
      may
have been Grant Morrison whilst promoting his DCs Multiversity Guidebook), who said that
      every
incarnation of DC's characters, be it live-action (films or TV), animation, novels or comics exists in the DC Multiverse somewhere.

Not the case. Some of the non-comic media have found their way into the main DC multiverse (aka "New-52", now in its
        Rebirth
phase), complete with their own reality designations and everything, the vast majority of them however remain in seperate multiverses of their own.
The CW shows, for example, are in the multiverse designated "Arrowverse".
You're suffering from delusions of adequacy.

          I'm following Rebirth.
I'm not saying one way or the other, just putting Morrison's (or whoever's) take on it.

Thanks - I've actually got a copy of that.

There was a post on this board sometime last year that went into WAY more detail, but given IMDB has a 20-page thread limit for every movie/show, it's apparently been cycled into oblivion.
                Tommy how's the peeping?
