How did a hologram cause damage ?

I don't have a problem believing that a teenage kid could somehow project a hologram of a monster in the middle of the city. But if it was just a hologram then what caused the damage. There was a scene where car crashed into a bus or something. And then we saw Barry and Iris help some people get off another bus. How exactly did the hologram cause all that damage ??

It required a lot of energy so the transformers nearby the hologram overloaded. The panicking people probably caused most of the destruction involving the traffic but I'm guessing the traffic lights could've been affected.

Yeah, the kid fried the generators, the rest of the mess was just people panicking and crashing their cars and stuff.

It didn't. People did, but the team didn't even notice that. How did they not notice? Also how did he afford such a device? His parents are wealthy? So many questions.
