Why were they in outer space?

At the end of the zombie episode, after Jax and Martin talked, the camera zoomed out and revealed that the ship was in outer space. Why? I thought that they spent their off times in the temporal zone or time stream or whatever it's called.
Have they ever been into space before? I can't remember. I think it's happened once, right?

I thought the same thing.Why are they sitting in space? They aren't space explorers.
The only answer I could come up with is, cheaper production.

That's probably the answer. Thank you. I didn't think of that. I thought if they wanted a break, they could just find a quiet clearing and turn the ship invisible or stay in the time stream. Choosing outer space was random in my opinion.

I'm not sure why they'd be in outer space at that point, but they have been to outer space in the past. Can't remember exactly when, but I remember Stein being very excited about it.
