And remember, they get maybe half the worldwide gross.
Yes but don't forget that last year only 30% of the Film entertainment division of Warner Bros. came from the box office, movie tend to do more money after their theatrical run for the studio than during it.
Maybe they will spend 375 million making the movie, distributing and marketing it, but they should do over 550 million in total revenue from it.
Lot of money for them (and Smith/Ayer/Snyder/others with bonus deal and their venture investor that participated in the financing). -

A movie like this is supposed to make a big profit at the box officeall the more since many of the more lucrative options for a superhero films don't exist herec'monnot much market for toys, games, action figures. DVD sales will be okay, nothing more.
Because so many movies fail, it's important for movies like this to make big profits to cover the losses.
This is a much less financially successful film than GOTGand of course it also is a much less successful film creatively speaking.
Not a bomb. But not any kind of major hit, going by the standards of a big budget comic book summer release with major names in the cast. -

I doubt it, it almost never happen for a movie to make profit at the box office alone, let alone a big profit.

Video games sales were big last year for WB studio, bigger than box office theatrical revenues..
http://www.timewarner.com/sites/timewarner.com/files/related-articles/TWX_2015_Annual_Report.pdf
2015 revenue
Warner Bros. total: 12.992 billion
Video games: 2.214 billion
Movies business total: 5.143
Film rentals: 1.578 billion
Home video and electronic delivery: 1.717 billion
Television licensing: 1.579 billion
This is a much less financially successful film than GOTG
Would not surprise me to be the case once you consider Will Smith participation shares and Guardians that should do be better at the home entertainment business, but not by that much :
http://deadline.com/2015/03/guardians-of-the-galaxy-profit-box-office-2014-1201391217/
Guardian of the galaxy deadline estimate:
Theatrical revenue: 338.6 million
post theatrical revenue: 385.88 million
Total cost: 520.28 million
Profit: 204.2 million
Even if Suicide Squad, make 70 million less at the home entertainment business, it would be a massively successful with over 100 million profit movie. -

How does that do anything but prove what I just said?
And as for videogames, WB is making money on those with the big marquee characters like Batman.
Not with Suicide Squad. That's adding basically nothing to the bottom line in their games division. -

GOTG is mucn more family-friendly, and made a whole lot more money post b.o. than SS will. And it alsoas your own figures showmade a lot more money AT the box office.
And it's not one of the biggest hits ever, itself. It was a good start to an expansion franchise, but seriouslythere are no big stars appearing in that movie (Vin Diesel as a tree and Bradley Cooper as a racoon hardly count). There are no characters most people had heard of before the movie came out.
SS had Will Smith, it had Batman and The Joker in cameo roles, and Harley Quinn was already pretty popular.
It opened much biggerand finished smaller.
That's indicative of a film that has not lived up to the studio's hopes. -

It did around 338 million at the box office, Suicide squad is around 320 million at the moment, not that huge of a difference.
And it's not one of the biggest hits ever
No, but one of the biggest hit of 2014, and no one ever suggested it lost money. -

Worldwide, six movies beat Deadpool this year. Including BvS (and The Secret Life of Pets).
SS is currently in 8th place worldwide, and could very well finish out of the top ten.
Same thing goes for domestic b.o.
