Maybe it's the opposite. Maybe Ayer really hates Cara. Think about it: he dresses her up like a dirty whore (literally - dirt was radiating off of her like PigPen) and then made her dance some ridiculous pop and lock dance at the end.

Give the guy a break. It's probably really hard for him to see scantily clad women in his daily life. I mean, after all, he's a famous movie director who isn't unattractive. Except Harley was in the cartoons before she was in the comics, and she was never demure. She used to make comments to the Joker about him "riding his Harley" and she once popped out of a cake covered in nothing but cream.

In the animated show perhaps.
But I'm not sure I would call a skin tight leotard body suit as chaste and demure.
But I do agree that as time went on the sexualized her more and more. But really you could argue that for many of the female characters in comics. -

The female characters are written by perverted men that like to fulfill their own fantasies. Artists have even admitted to using the bodies of porn stars as templates for their illustrations. Saying Harley is sexualized becuase of these artists is not a good point. She started out covered from head to toe, and that was part of her charm. Now she walks around in a corset and booty shorts.
