Superman IV is an incompetent, badly made pile of dung with few redeeming features and yet I still find it more watchable and entertaining than Man Of Steel, which is such a horrible movie it insults my sensibilities. Superman IV at the very least still had a bit of heart, too. MoS is a joyless soul sucking experiencing from start to finish. In theory I'm not even opposed to the idea of a darker take on the Superman world and characters, and I think Henry Cavill could have given a beautiful performance in the role with a competent director and good script, but there's something about MoS that pisses me off like no movie ever has. It actually made me angry, and it's just a movie!
Superman IV, while terrible in its own right, still had some good ideas in there and a cast who had warmth and chemistry. I can, if pushed, name a couple of things I like about SIV. With MoS I have never felt so miserable watching a movie. I don't know how anyone could get it so wrong. I'm not even a Snyder hater as I loved Sucker Punch and had been excited about MoS until I watched it. But yes, overall I would say MoS did somehow managed to be worse than SIV. -

superman 4 looks more real. the colour of the film is realistic. the photography is better
man of stool or 99% of movies after 2000 look fake.
that alone is why superman 4 is better.
some people don't like cgi. i think the fx of sm4 were horrible but i still think they're better then cgi.
nuclear man was cool. minus a few stupid moments. lexx in man of stool looked like a dork. what's with the haircut? guy looks like a major dweeb.
i could only watch the first 30 minutes. walked out. only way i'd watch a movie in the theatre these days is if i was strapped down clockwork orange style.
there aren't any more artists. just fartists.
the best new movies are worse then the worst old movies.

A bit like comparing apples and oranges -a considerably low budget 1987 theatrical effort by Cannon Films and a hugely produced reboot of Superman from 2013 but I will participate.
I think what Superman 4 does right is the tone and aesthetic of DC comics. Nuclear Man is a DC direct action figure brought to life, and it's something I really miss about DC movies. I think the last one to even come close to this aesthetic was the Green Lantern movie, and while I think Green Lantern was actually much better than people give it credit for, we all know the drab humorless DC theatrical universe we're stuck with now as a result of its rejection. Everything has to be Dark Knight now, which wasn't all that great to begin with.
Man of Steel was cool in a kind of gimmicky way. What if we made the smurfs black instead of blue? Like looking at super realistic renders of the Simpsons complete with skin pores and crazy realistic detail. It's like an aesthetic experiment. Its a spectacle piece, but you do it as a concept, not an entire movie. Deep down, we all know this is not canon Superman. I'm sorry, but if there's no John Williams theme, it's not really Superman. The Superman movie tone is established. The theme is established. Deviating from these fundamental aesthetic pillars is weird. It's not Superman. It's something else entirely.
So I would say Superman 4 The Quest for Peace wins out because it's a legitimate Superman movie. Superman Returns is also a legit Superman movie. The script just sucked and Singer wasn't the right director for it. Superman Returns should have been the Dawn of Justice concept. At least then things could have been tied together. Now everything just feels like a huge mess. I blame the internet and DC/Warner's lack of conviction. -

I dunno why people hate MOS. I loved the fact it was different to all theses older films, i liked the fact it was destructive (as was Superman 2 but on a smaller scale) And i loved that Superman Killed Zod (Like he did in Superman 2)
I've enjoyed all the Superman films, but part 4 is probably the weakest but it's still good fun.
