'Doctor Strange' Review: The Sorcerer Subpar
The visuals are worth the price of admission, but this is as generic and by-the-numbers an origin story as the MCU has ever made. It's better than 'Green Lantern,' but it will remind you of 'Green Lantern'.
I realize that comparing any comic book film to Green Lantern is a game of dangerous trollery, so for the record, I dont hate Green Lantern. But thats the comparison that sticks out in regards to Doctor Strange. It too offers unapologetic fantasy imagery within a painfully generic chosen one accepts the call origin story. When superhero pics are among the dominant forms of would-be live-action blockbuster, being a so-so heros journey origin story isnt enough.

    Total malarkey.

His complaint, which will undoubtedly be the complaint of many is the familiar origin story. The thing is, these are super hero movies, and often, super heroes have similar origins. It's been like that in the comics for decades.

Scott Mendleson agrees with the tomato meter 70% of the time and called Suicide Squad One of the worst comic book films ever made.
        Is HE on Disney's payroll?
Probably not the critic you want to use.
He also trashed Gal's new film.

Scott Mendelson is a self confessed DC fan yet even he only called Dr Strange a subpar movie but called BvS a disaster.

Good point. And he uses a DC film as a measuring stick.
            Doesn't really help the argument.

we know the MCU is capable of much more. I am torn between being too harsh on a visually ambitious entertainment versus grading on a curve
Got to be hard when your first negative review comes about because you have set your own standards so high. This sort of occurred for me with The Dark Knight Rises which is a watchable film but given how good Batman Begins and The Dark Knight was The Dark Knight Rises was really disappointing.

There's a difference between rating a film in a trilogy versus comparing a film to a different set of films entirely.
People see a White, middle aged snob and all of a sudden he's a copy of Tony Stark.
Doctor Strange isn't Marvel's answer to Harry Potter either.
Mendleson isn't really a good critic. His reviews are way too personal and he is bias.
TDKR wasn't a good film. And holding it to a high standard is fine.

Super Hero Origin Stories are usually lackluster. Maybe with the exception of Batman Begins and IronMan. They follow the same recipe over and over again. But that's quite alright, we're talking about Super Heroes here.
This bit I find amusing, though

specially because that's exactly what Dr. Strange is all about.
You're more advanced than a cockroach, ever tried explaining yourself to one of them?

Exactly, that's what Strange is all about and last time I checked so was Superman.
We are waiting for him to save the Justice League now, lol
