It seemed as if it was, as Calista made reference to them being together but was curious if there were further clues?

they never actually said one way or another, Johnny said simons had a sexuality all his own, so its possible but not certain.

Exactly, that scene vaguely implies Simons was gay and had sex/groupsex with himself and that Johnny was gay as well but leaves it up to interpretation. I haven't seen the second season.
"Need" is just a fiction. As is "should", "must", "value" and "importance".
