I love them both with their different meanings - How in Mask of The Phantasm, Bruce Wayne might have been able to become completely civilized feasibly, and then settle down. But then in the end, he has to get included into a mysterious case involving gangsters getting killed one by one by a sinister presence that looks like Batman. Brilliant story, voice acting, brilliant direction, brilliant art work. Great characterisations.
Batman Return of The Joker - The new Batman. I was sceptical of the concept of Bruce Wayne getting older, and having to include a new Batman to fill in the part. But I watched this, and it was awesome! Pretty short, but I loved The Joker's return through mysterious means (all explanatory in the movie), how Bruce Wayne has no way of becoming the caped crusader any more, and Terry McGuiness' redemption through the actions he partakes in as Batman (as he was nearly going down a sloped down path). I thought the case with The Joker's disappearance was actually creepy! I mean, the flash back sequence I am referring to. And how Tim Drake former Robin has become the genesis of something much worse Overall good characterisations, very well done sequences, a thrilling feeling when Joker returns, and it is truly underrated.
If I were to pick one It would definitely be Mask of the Phantasm. It sets a very good, and balanced tone. It's got enough in there to keep the movie flowing. It's one of the most rarest Animated features to ever hit the box office (You know like spin off's) but I just feel that the story to it, how much you sympathise with Bruce Wayne, and the case with the Joker was just brilliant to watch. I still love Return of The Joker, though, but just not as much.
The signature is truly mightier than the
          name
          !

Mask of the Phantasm by quite a bit.
It felt like a much more complete film and less like a TV special

Both are really great, but Return of the Joker is a bigger adrenaline rush for me. The Joker is just razor sharp insane, and I love it. The flashback scene with Robin is probably the best thing the DCAU universe ever did.

Mask, certainly, not that this is bad far from it in fact, but Mask is one of my favourite animated films of all time
there's no point in being grownup if you cant be childish sometimes!!!

I don't get it. How are they comparable?
Lincoln Lee: I lost a partner.
Peter Bishop: I lost a universe!

They're animated Batman movies featuring The Joker and flashbacks.

                      I see.
May as well throw in Red Hood because it features Joker who abused Robin.
