Of course, that would've been much, much better than the actual
    Superman III
that we got w/ Richard Pryor and Robert Vaughn's corporate tycoon villain (who was a
    major
stepdown from Zod, Ursa and Non). I know that Christopher Reeve was originally supposed to cameo in
    Supergirl
, but for whatever the reasons, dropped out at practically the last minute. Had Supergirl appeared in part three (maybe she could've been forced to "save the day" once Superman became evil), it would've certainly added more credibility and weight to her own spin-off movie.

I have a soft spot for both films, so had there been room for her, it might have been interesting. But introducing her, and developing her relationship with her cousin Superman might take away from the villain and Clark's romance with Lana. So it might be best SUPERGIRL got her own origin film, but it would've been nice had the two actually met.

The initial rough draft script story for "Superman III" was written by Ilya Salkind and did introduce 'Supergirl" and Brainac. Its available online for download and was very alien invasion like with the villans but had 'Supergirl" being his new love-interest not as his cousin at all to replace actress Margot Kidder's Lois Lane with Kara aka Supergirl instead.
This script was rejected anyway as too expensive ect and for other considered matters and screen writer husband-wife team David & Leslie Newman fashioned and tailor made a cheaper more down-to-earth version with Richard Pryor and computers in mind for the eventual script as shot by director Richard Lester.
Intially Superman was to make a breif appearance tying 1984s "Supergirl" with Christopher Reeve's movies. However reeve rejected the cameo in script and they had his character instead fly-off on some outer-space peace keeping mission and used Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Oleson to tie the film series together as a replacement.

It's an interesting thought. In the Superman universe, you'd think they'd want to at least meet each other. And as you say, it might have given Superman 3 some much needed credibility.

Then Supergirl would have been in two horrible movies from the 80s.
