How did Arcane survive at the end of Swamp Thing 1?

Dr. Anton Arcane (Louis Jourdan) at the end of the first film turned into a hairy beast by driking Alec Holland's potion. Arcane then was killed by Swamp Thing when Swampy thrust a sword into him. So how did he survive? I don't remember any explaination in The Return of Swamp Thing on how Arcane 1) survived being killed with a sword and 2) how he got turned back to normal after mutating into a beast. This seems to be a huge plot hole. Please help me if you know any information. Thanks.

Plus, they also show in the movie that without his treatments, his body's breaking down. The scene near the end with Sarah Douglas showed him noticing that his hand wasn't right. So however he was cured, it probably wasn't permanent, or complete.

There was some potion involved. If I'm not mistaken, he was not dead from the stabbing in the first one and the scientists guy mutated him back, and like the otehr post said he was in an unstable state and could revert back or become worse.
Frankly I loved the first one and this one tried to be too goofy. And being a boob-man I loved Adrienne Barbeau more than locklear's sweet girl-next-door look. -

Not a huge plot hole at all, just a line of dialogue that was obviously missed.
The doctor says in one of the scenes that they found Arcane's body in the swamp and restored him back to his original form but his body was still decaying. -

Okay, I've just watched both movies this morning, so this matter is still somewhat fresh in my mind.
At the end of the first movie, after Swampy sticks Arcane with the sword, if you look closely at the shots of Arcane's body as Swampy and Alice are walking away, you can see Arcane slowly returning to human form. In the second movie, Swampy told Abigail that he had thought he had killed Arcane. Later, when Abby was taken against her will down to the laboratory, Rochelle states that he and a colleague (to name escapes me at the moment) had found Arcane in the bog, near death. Eventually they were able to restore Arcane, but without treatments or the new serum they were developing, Arcane's body would eventually breakdown and he would die.
