The screen writer said; Theres always a potential to introduce a character. We have 8,000 of them, and they cant all be at the same level. So maybe there are some that are not so popular, and we introduce them [with a short] and they take off. I could see that happening. Lets say we wanted to introduce Ant-Man [in a short], and that would mean we have to cast him prior to having a filmmaker. Thats difficult and something we wouldnt want to do.
I think the best we could hope for would be references to new characters rather than actually seeing any. -

Koomy, I completely agree with you about the DVD/Blu Ray situation. I don't have a Blu Ray yet either, but they're slowly trying to force us all to get one. I have both Thor and Captain America, since they were at least nice enough to grace us with both formats of the film there. But I still haven't watched either of the previous short films because I really want to watch them on my own devises first.
As for this new short film, I think they really need to put some of these in the theaters too. I've mentioned this before, but I really think Marvel should get deeper into the short film business. I mean they can take lessons from their now step brother, Pixar, how they always start out with a short before each movie. But Marvel could take it further, because they could use these films to either further smaller plot lines not explored in their main movies, or introduce and use characters they just don't have time to get to elsewhere. Maybe that's a format that would best serve characters like Punisher, Man-Thing, Iron Fist, Runaways and when Marvel Studios gets him back, Ghost Rider. Maybe they could choose some of their more family friendly properties and have some of those open some Disney, even Pixar films! The possibilities are quite vast!

Short films before the features in the cinema would be a great way to go (even if its one released on the previous DVD eg 'Item 47' before 'Iron Man 3') as it would be a good way to further expand the MCU and bring in new characters/plots relatively cheaply.

With all respect to purple66 I have to disagree
I loved "on the way to thor's hammer" because it was short and funny.
It was nice to see agent Coulsin doing some butt-kicking (especially because of what happened in the avengers)
I liked the consultant also.
I hope item 47 will be like a perfect mix between the two other "one-shot" films and I look forward to watching it when avengers comes out on blu -ray -

I'm not expecting any big Easter eggs in this. Just the Chitauri weapons, that's it. The shorts aren't really used to introduce things, just extend on already introduced stuff.

I'm not 'expecting' too much either but there are things I would like to see in it
So far 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer' was the most entertaining but 'The Consultant' had important plot points.
I would like 'Item 47' to do both! -

Right now, Joss Whedon has been announced as returning to direct Avengers sequel but also helping develop a new Marvel Cinematic tv series for ABC. They said that it would focus on ordinary people in the Marvel Cinematic universe and I imagine that this was a testing ground for that. Atleast I hope, give Lizzy Caplan regular work.

So now I've seen it, these were the connections I noticed;
S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Sitwell (as seen in 'Thor', 'The Consultant' and 'The Avengers') is given the assignment of retrieving the Chitauri weapon which S.H.I.E.L.D has designated as Item 47.
The death of Agent Coulson is confirmed in conversation.
Agent Blake and two other S.H.I.E.L.D agents are introduced, and could feature in the TV show and/or future films.
The end credits show that S.H.I.E.L.D is succesfully reverse-engineering the Chitauri weapon and so the results of this work are likely to appear somewhere in Phase 2.
