Keep in mind that this is the Golden-Age Superman who debuted in 1938. He's not as powerful as the Silver-Age Superman of the mainstream DC Universe.

To clarify, Superman's invulnerability as of 1938 was that "Nothing short of a bursting shell could break his skin". Also, he couldn't fly. By the 1950s, when this takes place, he was already stupid powerful, but Cooke wisely ent back to his golden age abilities, plus flight.

He gets hurt but not dead.
Even th crazy powerful superman could get killed by mere force, look at the Doomsday story.

There will be some contradictions over time, its not bad writing, its just naturally happens when tens of different writers are all working on the same character for 70 years.
There have been definite "relaunches" of superman, 3 I think, and each time his powers are rounded out in a slightly different manner. Theres the first superman who could only leap tall buildings, and wasnt quite as impervious. This is the second Superman who is invulnerable but can still be roughed up, the 3rd was the invincible except for kryptonite version.
The 4th and modern iteration is slightly weaker, allowing him to be bested in galaxy-class fights and be killed by Doomsday.

Now this post will be followed by people explaining to me how Superman has always had
                  "x" power at "y" time
                  , but not
                  "z" power at "w" time
to which I refer them back to my original point, and my summation.

                  Fascinating. It's like he's psychic.

The Centre could've hit the others with that beam too That was a bit surprising to me. It could've hit all those planes with that beam and they would have turned to ashes.

the only bad bits in the film was EVERY SINGLE SECOND that wonder woman was on screen. she was horribly unbearable in this. everything else was fine.
