California's attorney general on Friday sent a cease and desist letter to xAI, demanding the company immediately halt the creation and distribution of fake sexualized images of children.
Lawmakers and regulators have raised legal concerns over xAi's editing features, which allow users to create nonconsensual, intimate images and child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including explicit images or videos of minors.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta on Wednesday opened an investigation into the platform to determine whether and how xAI may have violated the law, following repeated instances of AI-generated nude images of underage girls or women on the app.
Bonta on Friday said the creation of CSAM is a crime, adding that Elon Musk's business practices are also in violation of California's civil laws.
X and xAI did not immediately respond to Axios' requests for comment.
"The avalanche of reports detailing this material — at times depicting women and children engaged in sexual activity — is shocking and, as my office has determined, potentially illegal," Bonta said in a statement.
"I fully expect xAI to immediately comply," he added. "California has zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material."

Is there an actual law about this though? Technically it's not child sexual abuse since it's not real children and no one was harmed.

I'd say it would be a much better thing for California to ask "
        Who
" is asking for images of minors that are sexualised
A much better fit for catching arsonists isn't to ban fire, but to fine out who it is wants to know about it. There will be plenty of legitimate cases, of course, but at least those wanting to know can be catalogued as interested.
I'm sure California would be a much better off place if everyone who wants access to images of minors which are sexualised is on a ledger, same as skin tone and gender.
I'd put people like Sophie/Warren on it. Justin case, no harm, no foul. Better safe than sorry. The OP is right in with that mix

There are victims. My understanding is that people (Juan was undoubtedly among them) were sending photos of real children and asking Grok to undress them.
